How to Make a Spooky Skeleton Charcuterie Board

Last year for Halloween, my kids and I thought it would be fun to create a pumpkin charcuterie board. It was super fun to make and it turned out amazing! We also had a great time snacking on all the goodies we placed on the board.

This year we decided to do something a little different. We mastered the Jack-o’-lantern charcuterie board last year, so we thought why not make a skeleton this time to celebrate the spooky season.

Halloween will be here before you know it! Are you hosting a Halloween party? Are you invited to a Halloween get-together and want to bring something over the top spooktacular that will wow family and friends? Here is your chance!

If you want to make an awesome skeleton charcuterie board like we did, below are the steps to success:

*First: Find Your Canvas: Think about how a skull is shaped. Look to see if you have anything in your home that fits the bill in terms in shape. It could be a platter, large plate or cutting board. I used a skull shaped board I found on Amazon, so this step was pretty simple. If you want to make things easier you can use a board like this. Link to Skull Cutting Board – https://amzn.to/46BIQRP

This skull shaped board is perfect for Halloween! It could also be used to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

If you prefer not to use a skull shaped board, then you could use something else that looks resembles a skull. You could even create the shape yourself. It could be as simple as drawing the outline of a skull on a piece of paper and using that as the perimeter to guide you. This is all up to you.

*Second: Create a Shopping List and Gather Supplies: Before putting together a shopping list, build up some inspiration. I recommend looking on Pinterest, Google or even Instagram. Finding an image to reference is key to success. This is because it will stimulate creativity within your brain and enhance cognitive abilities.

For this particular endeavor, think white and black snacks to create an over-the-top fabulous skeleton snack board. There are so many different treats you can use. I know you will be able to come up with so many yummy options.

Below is a list of items we used to create our Skeleton Charcuterie Board:

  • Yogurt Pretzels
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Marshmallows
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Good & Plenty (white pieces)
  • Popcorn
  • Mini White Powdered Donuts
  • Candy Sticks
  • Yogurt Raisens
  • Oreo Cookies
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

This above list is provided as a helpful guide to spooky success. When it comes to making a fun skeleton charcuterie board, the possibilities are endless. You are the Picasso here, do what speaks to you.

*Third: Prep and Assembly: Now that you have your canvas and all the bones to work with, it is time for the fun part. Seeing your skull come to life, well not literally. Ha ha.

Before you start assembling your skeleton board, be sure you prep any items in advance. This is all dependent on which snacks you plan to place on your board. It could mean, washing, cutting, dicing, etc.

Once the ghoulish goodies are ready it is time to start creating. For the skeleton skull, I recommend placing the black or dark areas (eyes, mouth and jawbone) first. Because most of the skull is white, the dark parts will serve as anchors in the design.

With this specific skeleton board, we placed the items in the carved face as shown below:

If you use your own board or draw the skull yourself, I still recommend doing the dark areas first to create both an outline and anchor areas.

After this step is done, you can then focus on the white portions. Place the white colored goodies around the eyes, mouth and jawbone. You may assemble the pieces horizontally, vertically, diagonally or mismatched.

We grouped certain snacks together, then once filled in, we placed smaller items (mini marshmallows, pumpkin seeds and popcorn) in the little gaps in an effort to hide the wooden board beneath.

*Fourth: Admire and Enjoy: Now that you created both a cute and frightful masterpiece, it is time to step back and admire your crafty work. Friends and family will be so impressed with what you have made. Very important, do not forget to photograph this superspectacular sight before the goblins start devouring.
