Decorating with Staffordshire Dogs

I have always had a fascination with Staffordshire dog figurines. This is before I even knew what they were called or what they were all about. I would often see them used in magazines which featured high end homes, at estate sales, antique shops, on Pinterest, etc. I would ask myself, “what are they called? Mantle dogs? Foo dogs? Were they English? Chinese?”

Something about them drew me in. I noticed wherever they were placed, whether it was on the mantle, on a bookshelf, end table, etc., they always created such an upscale scene. They enticed me with their refined and sophisticated look. I simply had to have a set of my own! I actively began searching for the perfect pair, so I too may have my mantle looking like a million bucks!

I also did some research and found that the porcelain dog figurines originated in 19th century England, in the Staffordshire region specifically. Hence the name, Staffordshire dogs. They were handcrafted out of porcelain or earthenware and then hand painted.

Although made as a pair, each pup is truly unique. Authentic Staffordshire dog figurines never match completely because they are hand painted individually. In the photo below you’ll notice they are slightly different.

They were very popular during the Victorian Era and were considered a status symbol. They were typically placed on the mantle, therefore also called mantle dogs or hearth dogs. In museums and in grand historic homes, you will commonly see them displayed. For example, a stunning white pair is featured on the mantle in the historic Little White House in Key West Florida, a vacation home to many former presidents.

With the recent comeback of yellow gold, arrived a new emphasis on creating a sense of opulence and luxury in the home. The old money look has gained a lot of popularity, therefore making these elegant canines a perfect accessory to add that touch elegance to any space.

If you are looking to add some sophistication to your home, try jazzing things up with a gorgeous pair of Staffordshire pups. Because they are considered to be timeless accessories, they fit with all decorating styles. In addition, they are interesting and whimsical, which will really make your home unique. They are true conversation starters.

A pair of authentic Staffordshire dog figurines can be quite expensive. A pair can range from $150 to $1,500+ depending on size, type and condition. This is quite pricy for mantle accessories. If you are interested in decorating your home with a beautiful pair of Staffordshire dogs, but budget is a concern, do not sweat it. My recommendation to achieve the look for less is by looking at estate sales, flea markets, Facebook marketplace, Etsy, Ebay, garage sales, etc. I found the pair below at a flea market for a steal! $35!

If you would like a pair to decorate your home with, but are struggling in the places I mentioned above, or your simply cannot find them for a deal, then you may opt for a brand-new reproduction set. I found these beauties below on Amazon for $52! They are not authentic but totally look the part. They really give off that upscale look! Link – https://amzn.to/3CvaKmn

Once you score your very own set of staffies, whether they are authentic or reproduction, you’ll see that the possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating with them.

Below are some pictures to help you get started:

*Decorative Vignettes, Buffets and Tablescapes: You’ll find that these little doggies are the perfect complement to a buffet table, tablescape or among an elegant tea or coffee service. Why not add some uniqueness to your table.

*Seasonal or Holiday Decor: You’ll quickly see that Staffordshire dogs are perfect accessories to enhance your holiday or seasonal decor. Add an accessory to an accessory, like a bow to a dog figurine, and quickly see an over-the-top display transform. Placing them near flowers, pumpkins, candies, decorative objects, or other seasonal items will create a very interesting and classy setting.

*Mantle or Bookcase: Staffordshire dogs look AMAZING on the mantle! Why not deck out your mantle with a set of them. They also look uber sophisticated when used as bookends or placed on a bookcase. They give off an interesting and curated look, making your home looked both unique and refined.

Happy Decorating!
