Why You Should Buy a Chesterfield Sofa

You may be asking, what a Chesterfield sofa is. It is an English style sofa, with a low back and rolled arms. The arms are the same height as the back of the sofa. They are usually upholstered in leather, tufted with deep buttons and adorned with nail head trim.

Below are six reasons you should invest in a Chesterfield sofa:

One: They are timeless; therefore, they never go out of style. They are the epitome of elegance and sophistication. They are beautiful and easy on the eyes. All the beautiful tufting, buttons, nail head trimmings and intricate details will leave you in a trance.

Two: They are transitional. They are classic, with a capital C, and fit in with nearly all decorating styles. You can put a Chesterfield sofa in pretty much any room of your home and it will look great. A living room, a study, a den, a large foyer or even a bedroom! You will never regret purchasing one because the piece will synchronize with whatever your decorating style is and adjust to any changes you make in the home over the years. Because of this, investing in one will save you money in the end.

Three: They are comfortable. With the low back, the chesterfield may not appear to be comfortable, but it is. Looks can be deceiving! The sofa was designed for comfort, since the cushions mold to your body. They also reinforce an upright sitting position, so there is no strain on your back. The tufting remains plump and firm because everything is meticulously sewn together with various buttons, thus aiding to one’s comfort.

Four: They have longevity. Most sofas these days are mass produced, therefore only having up to a five-year life span. Chesterfield sofas are made to last you a lifetime. This is because they are made with higher quality materials, mainly leather, and upholstered carefully by hand with techniques aiding to their longevity. The frames are also very sturdy and solid as they are made from hard wood and reinforced with appropriate joints. So much more time and skill are taken to manufacture these sofas versus mass produced versions. Again, investing in one will save you a lot of money because in five years you will not have to keep buying a brand-new sofa every three to five years. That gets expensive!

Five: They are easier to clean and hypoallergenic. As I mentioned earlier, Chesterfield sofas are mainly made of leather or sometimes faux leather, therefore they are easier to clean than fabric. Spills and other mishaps can be quickly wiped up with a wet or damp cloth with virtually no stains left behind. And because leather is a smoother surface, it does not absorb dirt, dust, or allergens like fabric does. Leather also holds up better than fabric upholstery.

Six: They are practical and worth the value. For all the reasons I mentioned above, these sofas are more cost effective. This is because they are well built, durable, timeless, easy to clean and comfortable. They look very elegant, but they do not necessarily break the bank. There are mass produced leather sofas and sectionals currently on the market that are very expensive, but may only last you five years. Investing in a beautiful Chesterfield sofa is practical because you will not have to keep rebuying a sofa every few years. And at the same time the Chesterfield will remain in style.

These sofas are worth the value because they also create the wow factor in your home. People will notice right away and will be drawn to it. In my previous home, our Henredon Chesterfield sofa was in our living room, we received so many complements on it and even more when people sat on it. Now, our Henredon sofa is displayed proudly in our master bedroom. A perfect complement to our French-style bed. It looks very elegant and is a cozy piece we use to lounge on and read books. We currently have two matching Maitland-Smith Washington sofas in our living room and it makes the room look so elegant without sacrificing comfort.

Some Chesterfield Sofa brands I recommend are Hancock & Moore, Maitland-Smith, Henredon, Bernhardt, Hooker, Leathercraft, and Bradington-Young. Be cautious of tufted chesterfield sofas that are made to look expensive, but are actually reproductions. These items, may look luxurious and fit the look, but if they are mass produced, not made well and with high quality materials, they will not last. If you want to purchase a sofa, but feel confused about how to proceed, I recommend going to a furniture store, which sells high quality furniture and ask a sales person or design consultant questions. You do not have to buy brand new, if you want the look and the quality for less go for it! Just be educated about it. While you are at the furniture store, you can jot down some brand names and use that in your search at estate sales, Facebook Marketplace, and even Craig’s list.
